The Why

Mr Colin Davidson was my late father-in-law whose surname fell victim to the marriages of his various daughters. A general surgeon raised in Glasgow, he was a man of great wisdom, warmth and welcome. He was also, when you caught him on his own, a little cheeky; perhaps a throw-back to his medical student days in Scotland. I have a huge respect for him and thought that he and his name needed a little more longevity.
Mr William Butler is in honour of my great, great, great grandfather who was appointed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1843 to help build and connect the great cities of the UK by the railway network. Innovative, entrepreneurial and a grafter, William was the lesser known of the two but made a meaningful impact on the landscape of this country. The family’s crest and moto Fac Recte et Nil Time or “do right and fear nothing” has always resonated with me.
I took some advice I received from my ex-boss and Managing Partner at Korn/Ferry many years back, which was to “avoid putting your name above the door”. I think he’s right. I want people to work with me and not for me in the same way that I’d like to build team relationships with clients that feel like we are working with them rather than for them.
If any of this resonates with you, as a client, candidate, collaborator or potential colleague, then please drop me a line.
